I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing different products to try and find the best vegan omega 3 supplement.

While I’ll keep trying new ones, Future Kind’s omega 3’s are currently my number 1 ranking.

I’ve divided this specific review into 2 sections: what to look for in an omega 3 supplement, and how Future Kind’s omega 3’s stack up.

What Does a Good Vegan Omega 3 Supplement Contain?

There are 3 main types of omega 3 fats in foods:

  • ALA (from plants)
  • EPA
  • DHA

The body uses EPA and DHA directly, so they are ideal. ALA is found in foods like flax and chia seeds (see omega fat ratios in seeds), but is converted poorly to EPA and DHA in the body.

The one plant exception is that algae contains EPA and DHA (that’s where fish essentially get it from). So a good vegan omega product should be derived from algae.

In addition, marine sources of foods can be high in pollutants like heavy metals. Growing algae in a controlled algae farm can avoid this, which is something else you can look for in a manufacturer.

Detailed Review of Future Kind’s Omega 3 Supplement

Let’s break down how Future Kind’s product scores when you consider the above.

Amount of Omega 3s

There’s no RDA for omega 3 fats, but research does suggest that 300-900 mg total of EPA+DHA per day is good (source).

Future Kind’s omega 3 supplement contains the following per softgel capsule:

  • 150 mg DHA
  • 75 mg EPA

That’s 225 mg total, so taking 1-2 softgels likely puts you at a good level of omega fat consumption.

Keep in mind that you might get some omega 3 fats from other foods like seeds.

Source of Omega 3 Fats

Other than the softgel ingredients, this supplement only contains algal oil (i.e. oil from algae).

On Future Kind’s website, it’s clearly stated that:

We use a type of deep sea algae, grown in fermentation tanks, in a controlled environment, free from any outside contaminants

This is ideal, as it eliminates any possible pollutants and is completely sustainable.

Other Things to Consider

There are a few other miscellaneous things you may want to consider when deciding if this is the right supplement for you.

First is the size of the capsules. Future Kind’s softgels are relatively small, and measure about 0.5 inches (~1.2 cm) long.

Most people should be able to swallow them without too much trouble.

In addition, here are a few other things that I thought were notable:

  • Free from gluten, soy, and wheat
  • Third party testing
  • 30 day money back guarantee
  • Carbon neutral shipping

Overall: I Would Recommend Future Kind’s Omega 3

I do my best to not be biased when I review products, and try to find at least a few cons to be balanced.

In this case, there’s really nothing significant that I dislike.

Future Kind’s vegan omega 3 supplement ticks all the boxes of what to look for in a product.

The only real con is that if you don’t live in the United States, you may face extra customs fees.

Future Kind Vegan Omega 3
Of all the vegan omega 3 fats I’ve tried or reviewed, this is my #1 pick. Future Kind’s omega 3 fats are derived from algae grown in isolated fermentation tanks to minimize exposure to pollutants and are 3rd party tested.
