When I first went vegan, the only place you could easily find vegan specialty foods was Whole Foods Market.
Since then, other stores have caught up quickly, including Walmart, which has a large selection of foods for vegans.
This guide has all the food from Walmart that a vegan might be interested in, aside from the most obvious ones (e.g. fruits and vegetables, vegan jelly and jam).
You won’t find them all in all Walmarts, but it will give you a good idea of what to look for. You can also order most of them from Walmart online.
Note about palm oil: Whether or not palm oil is vegan is controversial. Personally I don’t eat it, but many vegans do. I’ve included products with palm oil, but I’ve tried to point them out when possible.
Table of Contents
Vegan Dairy Alternatives
Most of these are one-to-one replacements for dairy products.
The taste of most of them still isn’t quite perfect, but has come a long way in recent years.
I’m not going to list the obvious milk substitutes like almond milk and oat milk. Walmart has all those, plus coconut milk, which is a great vegan alternative to heavy cream.
Vegan Non-Dairy Cheese
Vegan cheese still has a bit to go before properly replicating the taste of dairy cheese, but a few brands are getting closer, and Walmart happens to sell them.
Follow Your Heart Cheese Slices. Based on my experience, the favorite cheese of the vegan community seems to be split between Follow Your Heart and Chao. Luckily, Walmart sells them both.
Field Roast Chao Cheese Slices. Chao is my favorite replacement for grilled cheese or sandwiches. It’s coconut oil based, and has an almost rubbery texture to it (like American cheese).
Daiya Cheese Shreds. Daiya doesn’t have the greatest reputation when it comes to taste. However, they’ve been improving consistently over the last few years and I think it’s pretty good now. This shredded cheese is great for pizzas and food like tacos.
Daiya Cheezy Mac. This is pretty comparable to Kraft Dinner, although I’d say the consistency is thicker. It’s also quite a bit more expensive, so look for sales. I’ve tried a few different flavors and have liked them all.
Cream Cheese
There are quite a few non-dairy cream cheeses at Walmart, and they taste fairly similar to cream cheese made with dairy.
Miyoko’s Cream Cheese. Miyoko’s is currently the best tasting vegan brand of spreadable dairy products in my opinion. There are multiple flavors and they all taste great.
Wayfare Dairy-free Cream Cheese. I haven’t tried Wayfare cream cheese, but Walmart sells it. It’s soy and gluten free, as well as vegan-friendly of course.
Tofutti Imitation Cream Cheese. This specific variety of Tofutti doesn’t contain palm oil, but certain flavors of tofutti cream cheese do. Check the label before buying if that’s important to you.
Kite Hill Cream Cheese Style Spread. This is an interesting cream cheese spread that is mainly made of almond milk.
Vegan Mayonnaise
Because you usually mix mayonnaise with other foods when you eat it, I can’t even taste the difference between vegan and non-vegan mayonnaise.
Walmart has a good selection of vegan-friendly mayo.
Vegenaise Mayonnaise Substitute. Veganaise is the most well-known and easiest to find vegan mayonnaise out there. To me, it tastes almost identical to regular mayo.
JUST Mayo. This is a simple mayonnaise that’s mainly made of canola oil, just like Vegenaise.
Spectrum Naturals Vegan Eggless Light Canola Mayonnaise. If you’re looking for a lower calorie option, this is it. Again, it’s based on canola oil, but formulated to be lower in calories than regular mayo.
Avonaise. This brand seems to be rising in popularity from what I’ve seen. It’s based on avocado oil instead of canola, which means that it’s probably healthier than the other vegan mayonnaise.
Vegan Yogurt
Vegan yogurt is quite expensive, and I still don’t think it’s quite at the level of dairy yogurt (which I used to eat a lot of).
Still, it’s better than nothing if you love yogurt or are just craving it.
So Delicious Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative. Known for their non dairy milk and ice cream, So Delicious also makes vegan yogurt.
Silk Yogurt Alternative. This is a yogurt based on almond milk, which Silk is also well-known for.
Kite Hill Dairy Free Yogurt. Kite Hill makes a variety of vegan dairy alternatives, including this yogurt that is based on almond milk. It comes in multiple flavors.
Daiya Deliciously Dairy and Soy Free Greek Yogurt. I’ve tried a few different vegan yogurts, and this one was mediocre tasting at best. On the plus side, it does contain a decent amount of protein.
Good Karma Dairy Free Yogurt. This might be the healthiest option of the bunch, and is one of the few yogurts you’ll ever find that is mainly made of flax milk. A great choice if you have nut allergies.
Vegan Butter
There’s barely any difference between vegan butter and “normal” butter these days.
It’s a shame that most vegan butters have palm oil, but Walmart does carry one that does not. Alternatively, you can make your own butter if you want to save money.
Miyoko’s European Style Cultured Vegan Butter. As mentioned, the quality of Miyoko’s products is extremely high. I’ve bought this butter a few times and it’s great. The main ingredients are coconut and sunflower oil. It’s also one of the few vegan butters without palm oil in it.
I Can’t believe it’s not Butter! Vegetable Oil Spread. If you’re looking for more of a margarine, this is an option. It’s mainly made from soybean and palm oil.
Country Crock Plant Butter. Country Crock is well known for their regular butters, but has also introduced a vegan line of plant butters. They come in sticks as opposed to a block like most others. The only potential downside is that it once again contains palm oil.
Earth Balance Made with Olive Oil Buttery Spread. Finally, Earth Balance is probably the easiest to find vegan butter. The taste is great, but it does have palm oil in all flavors (despite my emails protesting it!).
Smart Balance Butter: Note that only a few flavors of Smart Balance Butter are vegan, and even those have palm oil which many rule it out for you.
Vegan Meat Alternatives
Walmart’s selection of meat alternatives is decent, but lacking when you compare it to their non-dairy offerings.
They also don’t sell tempeh online (at least not at the moment), but I’m fairly sure I’ve seen it in stores.
Here’s what else you might be interested if you’re looking for plant-based protein.
Primal Strips Jerky Vegan Seitan. If you’re looking for a beef jerky replacement, this is it. The texture and taste is quite similar. The only downside is that it’s super expensive.
Upton’s Naturals Seitan. This is your best option if you’d like a small package of pre-made seitan. It’s still more expensive than making seitan yourself, but also more convenient.
Turtle Island Tofurky Sausage. These don’t really taste like sausages in my opinion, but do have quite a bit of protein. They are mainly made of tofu and vital wheat gluten.
Field Roast Meatloaf. It’s certainly not the prettiest thing, but Field Roast is one of your few options when it comes to vegan meatloafs, at least at Walmart. Note that it does contain palm oil.
Gardein Mandarin Orange Crispy Chick’n. Depending on the Walmart, you’ll find different selections of Gardein mock meats available. The quality of all them is high, but it may be hard to find the ones you want since availability can be unreliable.
General Tso’s Tofu. If you’re looking for a flavored tofu, you can get this one from Walmart.
Tofu. In addition to flavored tofu, Walmart has a wide selection of your standard plain tofu, with varying firmness. If you’re new to tofu, I recommend extra firm, it’s the closest you’ll get to “meat” (but still quite a bit softer). The softer “silken” tofu is best if you want to make a vegan sour cream alternative where you need to blend it up.
Vegan Snacks
Some snacks (e.g. chips, popcorn) often end up being vegan by accident. For example, some flavors of Doritos are vegan (not many, but some).
Others are specifically made for vegans.
Here are the most popular vegan snacks that Walmart carries. They’re most chips and candies, you won’t find much in the way of vegan baked goods like cakes or muffins.
Note that many cake mixes are vegan, just use a vegan egg alternative when you make them. Here’s a detailed look at which Betty Crocker cake mixes are vegan.
Fair Trade Dark Chocolate Bars. Most dark chocolate bars happen to be vegan, just check the ingredients for milk products. Walmart has a few brands of vegan, fair trade dark chocolate bars, including Alter Eco and Lily’s.
Enjoy Life Foods Semi-Sweet Mini Chips Snack Pack. Walmart has quite of few Enjoy Life products. They make multiple types of cookies that are vegan, gluten free, and allergy friendly.
Andean Dream Chocolate Chip Quinoa Cookies. Here’s another vegan and gluten free option for cookies, made mostly from quinoa instead of wheat. However, these cookies do have palm in them.
Free To Eat Cybele’s Cookies. Cybele’s cookies are oat based and free of the most common allergens like nuts and dairy. Note that they contain palm oil.
Theo Chocolate Salted Almond Butter Cups. Walmart carries multiple brands of nut butter chocolate cups. Theo makes almond butter cups, while free2b makes sunflower butter cups.
Bobo’s Bites. These bites (also come in bar form) taste great. They’re like a mix between a granola bar and cookie, and I believe all the flavors are vegan.
Yumearth Organic Licorice. It’s hard to find vegan licorice, but Walmart stocks this brand. Only downside is that it has palm oil.
Zaffi Taffy Fruit Candy. Most taffy isn’t vegan, but this brand that Walmart sells is. Note that it does contain palm oil.
Sunkist Fruit Gems. These little fruit gummies certainly aren’t healthy, but they are vegan-friendly (basically just sugar).
Wholesome Sweeteners Delishfish. Wholesome Sweeteners is a popular vegan candy company. Walmart sells their gummy fish and bears.
Surf Sweets Gummy Worms. Surf Sweet is the other popular vegan company that makes a variety of candy like gummy worms and jelly beans. Depending on the specific Walmart you go to, you may be able to find them.
Sensible Portions Sea Salt Garden Veggie Straws. I’ve eaten way too many of these crunch sticks. Not exactly healthy, but healthier than most other junk food.
Boulder Canyon Natural Foods Kettle Cooked Potato Chips. Most potato chips are vegan (other than flavors like sour cream). Walmart sells Boulder chips, and a few other brands that accidentally turn out to be vegan.
Halo Top Non Dairy Ice Cream. Halo Top makes low calorie non-dairy ice cream. I wouldn’t say the flavor is great, but it’s decent.
Vegan Supplements
Finally, Walmart has a great selection of vitamins that are vegan-friendly.
I’m not going to go over all of them here, just the most commonly needed ones.
Walmart sells many of the best vegan multivitamins, so you have a lot to choose from. There’s also vegan-friendly vitamin B12.
Deva Vegan Multivitamin & Mineral Supplement. Deva is arguably the most reputable vegan vitamin manufacturer. Walmart sells a few different Deva multivitamins (e.g. there’s one that’s iron-free).
Garden of Life Multivitamin. Garden of Life is another popular and trusted vegan vitamin manufacturer.
Doctor’s Best Multi-Vitamin. Another good vegan multivitamin in case your Walmart is out of other brands.
Deva Vegan Vitamins Sublingual B12 2500 mcg Tablets. Walmart sells a few vegan vitamin B12 supplements, but I’ll just list Deva’s here, which is probably the most popular.
I’m sure Walmart will add new vegan products over time, so I’ll try to update this page occasionally with anything new I see. Otherwise, feel free to leave a comment and share any of your favorites that I may have missed.
